Happy Pancake Day Everyone. La Chandeleur is the Catholic tradition in France (equivalent to Pancake Day). It is celebrated traditionally on the 2nd February. A great day for my children, as they are allowed to eat as many pancakes as they wish for tea and entertain us with some extravagant displays of flipping and catching the pancakes in the pan ! It is even more special for my family as we are from Brittany where "les crêpes" (pancakes) are the regional dish and are served all day long in "Crêperies" (pancake restaurants) to the delight of everyone. |
Paimpol is a small fishing port situated on the north coast of Brittany (Côtes d'Armor) situated approximately midway between Roscoff and St Malo. It is a very pretty town with cobble stone streets lined with shops, cafés, restaurants and bars leading to the quay area where you can relax with a coffee taking in the sights and sounds of the lively port. If arriving in St-Malo by ferry and heading west it is well worth the detour to explore this part of the Brittany coastline.
There are good ferry links to this part of Brittany from Portsmouth to St-Malo or Plymouth to Roscoff via Brittany Ferries (www.brittanyferries.com) January is the month where in France we celebrate the Epiphany by baking the traditional Galette des Rois cake. This is celebrated on the first Sunday after the 1st January to honour the three Kings (les Rois mages).
This celebration is a really popular dessert with families. 2 small figurines are hidden in the cake. Whoever discovers them becomes "the King and Queen" for the day !
